How it works

Thanks to the auto-unlock function tedee lock automatically recognize the user and it opens the entrance doors, when he gets close enough (in Bluetooth range).

The process will start as soon as the user enters the defined zone (entry) or detects the tedee bridge. After activation, the application will start searching for the lock using Bluetooth connection. After finding and establishing a secure connection with the lock, the application will automatically open the door.


Auto-unlock remains active for 20 minutes from starting. If the user reaches the door after this time, the lock will not be unlocked automatically.


Necessary conditions for proper operation

  • Bluetooth module is turned on in the user's smartphone
  • being within 3 meters of the lock
  • globally enabled Location services and enabled access to location services for the tedee application in the 'always' mode (it is not enough to add permission to the location service in the "while using the app" mode

Due to system limitations of the application's operation in the background, the use of the bridge improves the effectiveness of the auto-unlock process. However, make sure that the bridge is relatively close to the door.


When the auto-unlock function can be cancelled

  • user leaves the exit zone
  • user unlock or close the door from the application
  • another user unlocked the door in less than 3 minutes before the auto-unlock process attempted to open the door
  • time has expired to reach the door


Another auto-unlock process will not be possible until the user leaves the out zone.

Basic configuration

Before using the auto-unlock function, the user needs to set the current lock position. Based on the given position, algorithm determines two concentric zones from the lock position

  • entry zone (IN)
  • exit zone (OUT)



Latch pull function

If the automatic handle pressing (latch pull) function is enabled, the auto-unlock function will automatically open the door and pull the handle latch back. If the lock was already open, it would only pull the latch.


In a situation where the latch pull function is enabled, but without the automatic option, the auto-unlock process will be canceled if the lock is already open.


Confirming automatic unlocking

User can enable auto-unlock confirmation option, this the auto-unlock process will not open the door until the user confirms the operation. When the auto-unlock process is activated, user will see a notification where he can perform one of the following actions:

  • cancel the auto-unlock process
  • confirm and continue the auto-unlock process
  • if the user takes not action, the auto-unlock process will be cancelled after the set time

Configuration

By default, the auto-unlock feature is disabled. This function can be activated in the lock settings. Clicking on the "Auto-unlock" field will open the map in which, select the location of the lock. The address of the selected location will be visible at the top of the screen. Once selected, simply click the confirm button and auto-unlock is now set up.



Advanced configuration options



Entry zone

The radius of the zone beyond which the auto-unlock function starts. It is always smaller than the exit zone.


Exit zone

The radius of the zone after leaving which the auto-unlock process will be restarted.


Duration of the auto-unlock function

The time it takes for the user to reach the lock after entering the entry zone for the door to open, otherwise the process will be canceled.


Wi-Fi name check

Enabling this option will allow you to protect yourself against random location jumps on your phone. If the Wi-Fi name when leaving the exit zone is the same as the Wi-Fi name when detecting the lock while the auto-unlock process is active, it will be cancelled. The Wi-Fi name is not taken into account when the mobile device is connected to the hotspot.


Last auto-unlock status

It is possible to check what the status of the last auto-unlock was. You can check if the last operation was successful, canceled or if something went wrong. The reason for interrupting the operation is also visible.



Q&A

Question no.1: is the auto-unlock function safe?

The auto-unlock function works only locally, if the user is not within the Bluetooth range of the lock, the application cannot open the door. Before performing the opening operation, the application verifies (using asymmetric cryptography) that it has connected to the correct lock and the lock makes sure that it is connected to an authorized device.


Question no.2: does the app track my location?

The application only reacts to entry/exit zone events. Such an event is always delivered to the application by the system with a certain delay. The application does not know or monitor the user's exact location.


Question no.3: will the tedee app drain my battery?

No. The application does not track the user's location, which could cause excessive battery consumption, nor does it scan devices via Bluetooth when the user is outside the zone.


What could be causing the auto-unlock feature to malfunction?

Problem no.1: two or more people want to open the lock at the same time.

When several people connect their smartphones to the lock at the same time, a situation may arise where the first person to connect to the lock opens the lock. For other people, the process will be canceled. The next use of the auto-unlock function may only be available 3 minutes after the last automatic opening of the lock.


Problem no.2: auto-unlock did not start.

First, make sure that bridge is close to the door.

The auto-unlock process will not start or will start after some time in case of delays in sending location information. The solution to this problem is to increase the entry zone. When leaving the house, for the auto-unlock process to activate, the user must leave the exit zone and then re-enter the exit and enter zones. In this case, we recommend setting the exit zone to 100 meters from the entrance area.


Problem no.3: I have to wait outside the door to open.

This is because the application takes a few seconds to establish a Bluetooth connection with the lock.

Changing the position of the bridge can be helpful. Place it closer to the lock for more time to wake up the app.

Check how far your Bluetooth signal of the lock and bridge reaches. Do not keep the phone in a metal box, container or any other place that may limit the range of the signal.

The company of other electronic devices such as e.g. laptop, tablet etc. can also interfere with the Bluetooth signal.


Problem no.4: auto-unlock starts, but run-in time is too short.

If the defined entry zone is large and the configured time of the function activity is short, the auto-unlock process may end before the user reached the door. At the beginning, we recommend measuring the time it takes to reach the door from the defined entrance zone, and then setting the appropriate time in the advanced options of the application configuration.

Problem no.5 Auto-unlock cancelled with reason „Same Wi-Fi”

Auto-Unlock process may fail when you use your car's Wi-Fi connection. If Auto-Unlock does not work for you while driving home by car and the reason you get is „Same Wi-Fi” (it shows up in: "Device settings -> Auto-Unlock -> Last status"), you should disable „Wi-Fi Check” in the Advanced settings of Auto-Unlock. In iOS, car’s Wi-Fi is usually recognized as HotSpot... but not always and that causes problems. We use "Wi-Fi Check" to avoid accidental Auto-unlocks caused by rare but possible scenarios of random location jumps.
